GENERAL WARNING: OPTIONAL FIRMWARE UPDATE
Please read this entire document carefully before proceeding. The following firmware update for the ONYX RCR 80V is 100% optional and is not required for the normal, safe operation of your bike. Your vehicle will continue to function perfectly without it.
While this update introduces new features or optimizations, modifying your bike's firmware carries inherent risks. An interruption, connection drop, or unforeseen error during the flashing process can result in a disabled controller or display.
Do not initiate this update unless you have read the instructions thoroughly, are comfortable with technical troubleshooting, and understand that an installation failure may result in significant downtime for your vehicle. We are not responsible for issues resulting from a failed firmware update. In the event your update is unsuccessful, you may reach out to customer support for recovery assistance.
The new RCR 80V Firmware 2.0 was developed to enhance the already incredibly fun RCR 80V with improved vehicle status insight, learning modes, Thrill Tune speed caps, and enhanced commuter riding. This optional firmware is available to existing owners to get the latest and greatest software that will eventually be available on all RCR 80Vs in 2027. This is our commitment to support our existing customer base with as many of the same benefits future owners will experience. We hope you enjoy the new features and take full advantage of all the different modes, applying them to your various riding adventures.

Thrill Tune Hyper Mode unlocked (no speed cap)
Updated motor temp warning (power reduction starts at 140°C / power cutoff at 160°C)

Differentiators between Firmware 1.75 and Firmware 2.0
Thrill Tune: While Thrill Tune is available on Firmware 1.75 that has shipped with select bikes, it does not have the updated speed caps for Eco, Normal, and Sport modes. It also does not have the fully unlocked speed cap in Hyper Mode. Version 2.0 is the only version with these updates.
CarPlay/AA Screen: For Firmware 2.0, the CarPlay and Android Auto screens now have an exit control easily accessible without needing to enter the apps menu. It also features an added mode indicator, speedometer, and battery percentage to the right side of the screen.
Temperature Monitors: Exclusive to Firmware 2.0 are added motor temperature and battery temperature readouts that help the rider better understand the real-time status of their vehicle. This helps riders improve their riding habits and experience. Knowledge is power.
Common Questions
Do I need an Android phone or can I use my iPhone?
Yes, right now you will need an Android device such as an Android tablet or phone. You can usually find inexpensive tablets on Amazon for around $40 that will work perfectly for the update, as long as it's a newer tablet within the past few years. You currently cannot use an iPhone. We are working on an iPhone app, but there is no confirmed release date for this app as we are still in the approval phase with Apple.
Do I need a USB drive and what size?
Yes, you will need a USB drive. ONYX suggests a USB drive greater than 100MB (any 128GB USB drive will work). ONYX recommends that the USB drive has no other files on the drive to ensure a clean installation.
Will this eliminate the temperature warning and throttling?
No, this will not eliminate the thermal warnings or throttling. It will improve performance, and we encourage you to ride in Normal mode now that it has been raised to 55mph to keep the motor and battery cooler for extended periods of time. While we have extended the riding time until the motor temperature warning comes on, it is still very possible to engage the temperature warning with hard riding in Sport or Hyper modes. The temperature readouts will help you monitor the motor and battery temps to inform you when to take it easy and ride more conservatively. Remember, these temperature warnings are there as a decision to allow you as a rider to push the bike to its limits and have the full capability of performance without time limits. These warnings are not hurting your motor or battery as they are intended to keep your bike healthy and actually prevent real damage that many competitors fail to implement. With the new readouts, you should be able to see when you are getting close to 140°C and adjust your riding style. You can also come to a stop, prop your bike on its stand with the wheel in the air, and run it around 30-40mph to see the temperature actually cool down in real-time. This is a great trick you can use in a pinch to get you ready for a steep hill climb or the need to drag race someone and have the knowledge of your bike's temps to win the race.
Is Thrill Tune Hyper Mode any different?
Yes, Hyper Mode is slightly different. It has been fully unlocked, whereas Sport Mode has been capped at 65-70mph to help clearly define the two modes while improving the riding time in Sport mode. Hyper Mode is still a mode that you want to use in moderation, as its real intention was to give you a quick burst of power for a few minutes to overtake people in traffic or win drag races against other riders. It was never intended to be an exclusive riding mode for extended periods of time, and that fact remains with this update. As stated before, we highly recommend riding in the improved Normal mode in Thrill Tune to get the best blend of power, range, and motor performance.
When can I get the Firmware update?
Right now!!!
Do you hate iPhones? No. Android is just a much easier platform for ONYX to get approved on. As we stated above, we do have an iPhone app version, but we cannot confirm a release date as that is entirely dependent on Apple approving our app.
STEP 01 - Installing the APP (Side loading the APK)
Locate or purchase a newer Android phone or tablet from within the past 2 years for a smoother installation process. Here is an Android tablet on Amazon that will work for the update: Tablet
Once you have an Android device in hand, download the ONYX app here: [APP LINK HERE]
Locate the APK file on the Android device. Click on the APK file and open with the Android installer.
Android will ask you if you want to scan the app as it is not a certified app. You can trust us that you do not need to scan the app and click “More details”. Under more details, you can find the option to install without scanning. Scanning the app is possible, but it may cause issues, so ONYX recommends skipping scanning and installing the app without scanning.
Once you have successfully installed the ONYX app, you can move to Step 2.
STEP 02 - Setting Up the ONYX APP
To use the app, you must create an account first.
Once you are logged in, you can connect to your bike. To connect to your bike, turn it on and please ensure that you have no other ONYX RCR 80V bikes in the area that are turned on. Select the “Connect your ONYX” button and let the app scan for your bike.
Once the app has found a bike starting with “FAVO-####” followed by your bike’s 4-digit controller name, you may click the “Connect” button.
After clicking the “Connect” button, you will see the app open up the real-time data of your bike, like voltage, speed, etc. To ensure you have connected to your bike and not someone else's in your apartment building, you can prop the bike on its kickstand with the rear wheel in the air and test the speed readout. You should see the speed readout show your wheel speed when you give the bike some throttle. Do this with extreme caution as you could lose control of the bike, and no one wants to hear that story.
Once you have confirmed a solid connection between the app and the bike, you can move to Step 3.
STEP 03 - Installing the Controller Firmware!!!!
WARNING! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS IF YOU NEED TO BE SOMEWHERE WITH THE BIKE IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS! As clearly stated above, this firmware update is entirely optional and is not mandatory. This means that we are not responsible if you have any issues with the installation, and you must be prepared to send us your controller and/or display if you have any issues with the installation. We will gladly help you restore your controller and/or display with the updated firmware in the event of an installation failure. While you may be able to use recovery mode, that is not guaranteed, so please be fully aware that you may need to engage with customer support if your installation does not install properly.
Okay, now for the fun stuff. Don’t be scared—this should go smoothly if you follow the steps accordingly.
Head over to the “Me” tab located on the bottom navigation bar. Click the “Me” icon.
In the “Me” section, locate the “Software Update” option and click to open it.
Now in the “Software Update” section, you may click the “CHECK FOR UPDATE” button.
If the bike is properly connected, the app will detect your current firmware. If you have anything less than version 2.0.0.0 indicated under “CURRENT VERSION DETECTED”, then you can update the firmware with the target version.
WARNING! Please turn on Airplane Mode to avoid interruptions like phone calls, social media notifications, any notification, text messages, etc. To ensure this firmware has no interference, making sure you do not disconnect your phone, receive phone calls, or have your battery die, it is best to keep it in Airplane Mode and have at least 30% battery life available on your phone.
Now that you have made sure your phone will not receive any interruptions and you do not plan on scrolling through Instagram while the update is processing, you can confidently click the “FLASH FIRMWARE” button.
Next, a confirmation message will appear where you must fully read and accept the terms. Once you have read the message and agree to the terms, you may click the “START FLASH” button.
Now the bike should start the flashing process, and you must just put the phone down next to the bike as close as possible. ONYX recommends gently placing the phone without turning the screen off on top of your bike’s seat to keep a close and secure connection without interruption during the installation.
The installation can take up to 10+ minutes depending on the amount of data it needs to overwrite and install. Please be patient and let the process continue without interruption. Once the installation is done, you will see a message stating “UPDATE SUCCESSFUL”, at which point you may select the “I UNDERSTAND” button to go back to the “Me” section.
Now you have successfully installed the controller firmware, but you are not done! You must now move to Step 4 to download and install the display firmware.
STEP 04 - Downloading the Display Firmware
Downloading the firmware for the display is easy, as it is located on the app itself. However, you must transfer the zip file and unzip it exactly as demonstrated below. This ensures you always have the latest display firmware and do not use outdated firmware, as they may have the same build name. To avoid confusion, always use a clean, empty flash drive and always download the display firmware from the app. Never use display firmware from anywhere other than what is currently available on the app. If you do happen to use the wrong firmware or have an issue with the installation of the firmware, you will likely need to reach out to customer support to get a new display. This goes without saying: please DO NOT interrupt the installation by touching the USB or moving the USB, as this will most likely cause a failed installation!
To download the display firmware, navigate to the “Me” section of the app and click on the “Display Firmware Update” option.
In the “Display Firmware Update” section, click on “COPY DOWNLOAD LINK” and copy and paste it into your browser.
Once the link is copied into your browser, the download should begin. You will need to save it to the USB drive and unzip the contents onto the USB drive. Below you will find how to extract the contents correctly so it will update the display when inserted into the display’s USB port.
Locate the file on your phone or computer and get ready to transfer it to the USB drive in the next step.
STEP 05 - Extracting the Display Firmware on the USB drive
Once you have the zip file, extract the file onto the USB flash drive exactly as shown in the screenshots below.
Drag the zip file onto the empty USB flash drive.
Extract the zip file onto the USB flash drive. Make sure to extract directly onto the drive without a folder name.
Now that it is extracted into a single folder called “F133_IMG”, make sure the “.img” file is directly inside that single folder. You did it wrong if there are two folders before you see the “.img” file. The “.img” file should only be inside one folder called “F133_IMG”.
DO NOT RENAME THE FILE OR FOLDER!!!
STEP 06 - Installing the Display Firmware
Grab your USB flash drive with the firmware.
Locate your display’s USB port and uncap the port.
Insert the USB drive all the way into the port and do not jiggle it or move it once it has been inserted. Otherwise, you risk bricking your display.
The display will begin to update. DO NOT MOVE THE USB, DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR BIKE! Let the firmware update. It may seem like it is frozen, but be patient and walk away for 5-10 mins.
When the firmware is done updating, the display will restart. If your update was successful, you will see display updates like the motor and battery temps along with the Thrill Tune or Cruise Tune tabs. If it did not successfully update, you will see an unpropagated display only showing an “N”. Frozen displays will require you to call customer support and open a ticket for a repair.
HOW TO ENJOY YOUR NEW UPDATE
Switching throttle tunes: To switch tunes, you must be in “P” and then hold down the wrench / cruise control icon button located on the throttle side of your controls. Holding it down for 3 seconds will switch between Thrill Tune and Cruise Tune.
Temperature readouts: You will notice with this update you can now get real-time temperature data for your motor and battery located at the bottom left of the main screen.
Real-time Data on CP/AA: Enjoy the real-time data you've been asking for. Get an intuitive way to exit CarPlay or Android Auto with the “X” button on the top right of the CP/AA screen, and see your real-time speed/mode/battery percentage.
