RCR Battery Best Practices Guide

RCR Battery Best Practices Guide

Following these battery best practices will help maximize performance, extend battery lifespan, and reduce the risk of long-term issues with your RCR battery.

Battery Voltage & Remaining Range Reference

For a more accurate idea of your actual remaining battery level and range, we recommend monitoring battery voltage.

RCR 72V

  • 83V = 100%
  • 72V = 50%
  • 61V = 0%

RCR 80V

  • 91V = 100%
  • 80V = 50%
  • 64V = 0%

Voltage provides a useful reference for determining your remaining battery level while riding.

General Battery Care Guidelines

Lithium batteries perform best when they are not kept at extreme charge levels for extended periods.

  • Avoid storing the battery at 100% for long periods
  • Avoid storing the battery below 50% for long periods
  • For long-term storage, a charge level around 50–70% is ideal
  • Unplug the battery from the RCR during long-term storage

Charging Best Practices

During Regular Use

  • Charge the battery when convenient, not only when fully depleted
  • Partial charges are safe and do not harm the battery
  • Use the correct charger for your battery voltage and amperage

Charger Notes

  • Charging at a rate higher than the stock 10A charger can accelerate battery cell degradation and will void the warranty
  • If the battery is warm after riding, allow it to cool before charging, as it may not begin charging immediately. This is normal behavior.

Heat Management

  • Lithium batteries and motors generate heat under heavy load
  • Aggressive riding, sustained high speeds, and hill climbing increase heat
  • If the system becomes hot:
    • Reduce speed
    • Switch to a lower power mode
    • Allow the bike to cool

The bike may enter a protective reduced-power state when hot. This is normal and helps prevent damage.

Storage Best Practices

Short-Term Storage (Days to Weeks)

  • Store between 50–80% charge
  • Keep the bike in a cool, dry environment

Long-Term Storage (Weeks to Months)

  • Store the battery around 50–60%
  • Unplug the battery from the RCR
  • Check battery charge periodically
  • Do not leave the battery fully charged or fully depleted for long durations

Battery Health & Safety Notes

  • Lithium batteries can become unbalanced or unrecoverable if neglected
  • ONYX does not repair, refurbish, revive, or rebalance batteries. These services must be completed by a professional lithium battery shop.
  • If a battery becomes severely unbalanced or fails to charge properly, replacement is often the safest option

Connector Care

QS8 / QS9 Connector Best Practices

  • Ensure connectors are clean and fully seated
  • Dirty or loose connectors can cause:
    • Arcing
    • Power cutouts
    • Error codes
  • Exposure to weather, debris, or vibration can loosen connectors over time
  • Periodically inspect and reseat connectors if needed

Summary

Do:

  • Monitor voltage for a better idea of remaining battery level
  • Store between 50–70% when not riding
  • Unplug the battery during long-term storage
  • Let the battery cool before charging
  • Reduce speed if the system becomes hot
  • Keep connectors clean and secure

Avoid:

  • Long-term storage at 100% or near empty
  • Aggressive riding on low battery
  • Charging above the stock 10A rate
  • Attempting battery repairs
