Hello Riders,
We want to provide an update on the RCR 80V thermal management system, particularly during aggressive riding and sustained high-performance use.
When pushing your bike hard, you may notice the thermal management system engaging to regulate motor temperatures. This is a normal and intentional safety feature designed to protect the motor and electrical components. It does not indicate that something is wrong with your bike.
The RCR 80V uses a temperature-based protection system designed to prevent the motor from exceeding its operating limits.
The system operates at three temperature thresholds:
145°C (293°F) – Error 12 Warning: Overheating warnings begin appearing on the display, and the system reduces available motor power.
160°C (320°F) – Thermal Shutdown: Full thermal shutdown protection begins, preventing further motor power output.
170°C (338°F) – Maximum Motor Temperature Tolerance: The motor is designed to withstand temperatures up to 170°C. However, the controller is programmed to intervene before reaching this temperature by limiting power output.
An Upgraded Motor for the RCR 80V
Unlike previous RCR 72V models, the RCR 80V features an upgraded motor designed in-house by ONYX to support the significantly higher performance output of the 80V platform.
This motor is engineered to tolerate higher operating temperatures than its 72V predecessor. Although it can withstand temperatures up to 170°C, the controller's thermal protection system is designed to intervene before that limit is reached.
The amount of time you can ride at higher power levels before thermal protection engages depends on terrain, riding conditions, and riding style.
Here are a few recommendations for managing heat with the current firmware:
Understand the triggers: Continuous use of Hyper or Sport mode, rapid acceleration, sustained high speeds, and hill climbing will increase motor temperatures and may activate thermal protection.
Recognize power reduction: At approximately 145°C, Error 12 warnings begin appearing, and the controller reduces motor power to prevent further overheating.
Allow the motor to cool: When thermal management engages, we recommend switching to Normal mode for a few minutes. Once temperatures decrease and the warning clears, you can typically return to Sport or Hyper mode.
Use Hyper Mode strategically: Hyper Mode is designed for short bursts of maximum performance rather than continuous high-power operation. Using it selectively will extend your available riding time in higher-performance modes before thermal protection engages.
Important: If the system enters thermal protection, reduce power demand and allow the motor to cool. Do not attempt to bypass or disable the thermal protection system.
We've heard your feedback and understand that the current thermal management system can feel restrictive, particularly when power reduction occurs abruptly.
Our engineering team is actively developing a firmware update focused on improving this experience through:
Smoother power reduction: Introducing a more gradual power taper instead of an abrupt reduction in performance.
Refined thermal management: Improving how the controller responds as motor temperatures increase.
Potentially adjusted temperature thresholds: Evaluating whether thermal protection can safely engage at a higher temperature.
These improvements are intended to provide a smoother, more consistent riding experience while maintaining the protective safeguards built into the RCR 80V.

Thermal management is a normal part of high-performance electric vehicles. Similar behavior can occur on modified RCR 72V models operating at increased power levels, such as those running Sikko Mode.
The RCR 80V's upgraded motor and controller are designed to handle substantially greater performance demands while maintaining protective temperature limits.
We remain committed to improving your riding experience, and refining the thermal management firmware remains a priority for our team.
We appreciate the feedback our riders have shared and look forward to delivering these improvements.
Thank you for your continued support.
